They also changed some of the class loadouts. They removed a bunch of classes (6 compared to ~11 in the original). Instead they added melee range secondary attacks to some of the automatic weapons in the form of a punch. The Garand could no longer kill in 1 shot with a hit to the chest, and the German rifle required a headshot or chest hit to kill in 1 hit (if you don't remember, it was 1 hit anywhere in the original game). These were replaced with the ability to look down iron sights. Not even your first shot with an automatic weapon seems to hit on target, so you could empty an entire clip into someone at medium range and fail to kill them if you were unlucky.Ĭompare that to the original Day of Defeat where you could aim accurately with automatic weapons and compensate for muzzle rise by pulling your aim downwards.īesides that, bayonets for rifles were removed, as was the M1 Garand buttstock smack. Bullet spread in DoD:Source is - so far as I can tell - completely random. The change that stood out most to me was the recoil/cone of fire system. DoD:S was a complete disappointment for me because it plays so differently from the original. Like you I played quite a lot of the original Day of Defeat when I was younger. I'm not OP, but I'll give you my thoughts. I do think it fell short of Valve's expectations and perhaps was part of their efforts to move away from a game company and towards the service company they are today. Everyone thinks of Counter-Strike when they talk about mods becoming retail products but Day of Defeat was one of the first to do it. I think it had a great run and while it saddens me to see it not played very much any more I think that it's a great story to go from a popular mod to official Valve product. The game was simple and didn't have a ton of depth but it was pretty easy to get into and the skill cap was high (although not as high as Counter-Strike). Combined with a risk-like strategy game that was played out via these twice-weekly battles, it was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. This might seem small in the day of Battlefield 4 where a single server can host 64 people, but back in our day we had to split this across multiple game servers. I used to help run the largest tournaments for DoD called Battle for Europe, which had, at it's peak, over 100 people playing at any given time.
